Case Study: NDT Grit Blast Preparations

On-Site Grit Blasting of Furnace Tubes for NDT Purposes

Client

UK Power Station

Scope of Work

Mobilise to site to remove build up of scale and combustion contaminants from boiler plant and internal furnace pipework to leave a surface suitable for NDT.

Products

Abrasive: 30-60 Grade ‘Salt Clean Indian’ Garnet, conductimetricly tested with a comparatively low Salts Level of around 66 μS.

Substrate

Austenitic Chromium-Nickel Steel & Chrome-Moly Steel.

Method

A self contained KUE blasting rig was mobilised to site and situated at ground level as close as possible to the work area.

Heavy duty reinforced rubber blast lines were coupled together and run from the Blast Rig to the work area. Concurrently, KUE extraction units were fixed adjacent the work area, increasing the visibility and thus increasing the likelihood of safe working for all personnel in the work area. Working night shifts, up to four KUE grit blasters were able to operate at any one time over many weeks. After each shift, all scaffold levels were swept down by an intensive early morning labour team who removed the abrasive from the bottom of the work area through chutes and minimal manual bagged lifts. The work area was then returned to the client to carry out NDT (Non Destructive Testing).
